We all know that engines have changed a lot over the years. One of these changes is the introduction of fuel injection systems for gasoline engines. Direct injection and port fuel injection are two different types of fuel delivery methods, but which one is better?

Direct Injection, or DI, injects fuel directly into the cylinders of an internal combustion engine. Port Fuel Injection, or PFI, injects fuel into the intake port outside of the cylinder.

Overview of Direct Fuel Injection

Overview of Port Fuel Injection 

Port fuel injection is a system that injects fuel directly into the engine’s intake ports. It delivers gas to the intake manifold; from there, it’s distributed by individual runners or ports to cylinders that need fueling.

The idea behind port fuel injection was patented in 1927 and developed up until World War II when its development was halted due to wartime restrictions on metals. After WWII, General Motors developed their version of this technology for use on some models starting with 1949 Cadillacs and Oldsmobiles.

  • Its Injectors wear out quickly because they’re constantly being used. 
  • Its Injectors can’t handle high-pressure gas coming from a pump. 
  • Fuel efficiency decreases with higher pressure. 
  • The engine may not start if there’s too much air mixed with the fuel. 
  • Carbon buildup on valves and pistons will cause them to stick and misfire, which leads to more problems down the line.

Pros 

Provides a better and stable air/fuel mixture at lower engine speeds

Port Fuel Injection (PFI) provides a better and more stable air/fuel mixture at lower engine speeds. This means the engine will be able to provide power when it needs to and not just during high-speed acceleration.

Reduced Emissions 

Port Fuel Injection has been shown to reduce harmful emissions by up to 40% than Direct Injection. It is a fuel injection system for an internal combustion engine that injects fuel into the intake port upstream of the throttle body, rather than directly into the cylinder. This method provides better atomization and mixing with air, which improves efficiency and reduces pollutants in comparison to direct injection systems.

Cons 

  • Increased mechanical complexity with a greater number of parts including pumps and valves. 
  • Higher weight due to more equipment being mounted on top of the engine. 
  • Slightly lower efficiency because not all air entering the combustion chamber can be used for combustion
  • Possible oil leaks from seals around valve stem if they’re not properly lubricated or replaced when necessary. 
  • More difficult tuning compared to direct-injection systems which have fewer variables such as timing events and dwell time between injections per cycle.

The Bottom Line 

If you’re looking to get better gas mileage, want more power, or want your car to run smoother, then the direct injection is a good option for you. With port fuel injection, it takes longer for the air-fuel mixture to be delivered into the engine because it has to travel through pipes first before it gets there.

The result is less power and lower gas mileage than with direct injection. But, it is best for those who are on a shoestring budget. It is cheaper to manufacture and maintain. It also has fewer emissions than direct injection so that’s something to consider too!
